There’s something about getting married somewhere that already has so much character built into it. This fairytale wedding at Lairmont Manor is such a good example of how choosing the right venue can do so much of the work when it comes to bringing your vision to life. Between the historic architecture, gardens, warm wood interiors, and all of the little details throughout the property, the setting already had that timeless, storybook feeling before anything was added. Once you brought in the colorful florals, soft greens, lace, and personal details, everything just felt like it belonged there.

One of my favorite things about a historic venue is that you’re not starting with a blank space. Lairmont Manor already has its own personality, from the wood-paneled rooms inside to the brick pathways, gardens, and architecture outside. Instead of trying to completely transform the venue, you can lean into what’s already there and let it guide some of your choices.
You can really see that throughout this wedding. The soft green bridesmaid dresses and colorful garden-inspired florals worked so well against all of the greenery outside, while the bride’s lace gown and veil felt right at home against the more traditional details of the manor. Even the invitation suite and smaller details had this slightly vintage, whimsical feel that tied everything together without making the day feel overly themed.

When I say fairytale, I don’t necessarily mean going full princess wedding. It can be so much more subtle than that. Here, it was the long lace veil, the garden ceremony surrounded by trees and flowers, the romantic architecture, and all of those little pockets of light around the property that gave the day that feeling naturally.
That’s where investing in a venue you genuinely love can make such a difference. If you already love the bones of the space, you don’t have to bring in a million things to make it feel like your vision. Your florals, attire, stationery, and other details can build on what’s already there instead of competing with it. And from a photography perspective, it also means the setting continues telling the same story whether we’re photographing getting ready inside, portraits in the gardens, or everyone dancing later in the evening.

This is also why I love historic wedding venues so much. They give you layers to work with throughout the entire day. At Lairmont Manor, we could go from the darker, moodier wood interiors to bright garden portraits and an outdoor ceremony, then come back inside for a reception that felt warm and cozy. Every part looked different, but it still felt connected.
If you’re drawn to historic estates and manors, especially the kind you find throughout Virginia, think about the venue as more than where your wedding happens. Look at the architecture, landscaping, interior spaces, textures, and even the way the light moves through the property. If those things already feel like the wedding you’re picturing, you’ve found a pretty amazing starting point.

Your venue can be one of the biggest pieces in bringing your wedding vision together, and this day at Lairmont Manor is such a good example of that. You don’t need to cover up what makes a historic property unique, you get to lean into it and add the pieces that make it feel like the two of you. If you’re planning a wedding at a historic manor, estate, or another venue with tons of character, I’d love to photograph it in a way that captures both the space you fell in love with and everything happening inside of it.
