There’s something about an Iceland elopement adventure that makes it feel like you should experience as much of it as possible. And honestly, why limit everything to a few hours? Josh and Kim’s time in Iceland was spread across different parts of their trip, which meant we got the dramatic landscapes Iceland is known for and the cozy, completely normal moments in between. From exploring black sand beaches to playing board games at their Airbnb under the Northern Lights, their photos feel like their actual experience here, and that’s exactly what I love about planning an elopement this way.

An Iceland Elopement Adventure With Room to Explore

One of the best parts about Iceland is how quickly the scenery can completely change. We photographed Josh and Kim around the basalt columns at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. Explored the coastline near Svörtuloft Lighthouse, and quite literally pulled over when we found a spot under the prettiest cotton-candy sky. That last one wasn’t some perfectly planned location on an itinerary. It was just too good to pass up, and it ended up giving us some of my favorite photos.

Having more time together gives you space for moments like that. You’re not trying to cram every Iceland location you saved into one afternoon or watching the clock because you have somewhere else to be. We could explore, stop when something looked good, and actually enjoy the drive between locations. Which, for us, included switching between Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande and fully singing our way through Iceland. Josh and Kim love Ariana, I’m obviously bringing Taylor to the table, and this is exactly the kind of bonding time with my couples that I love.

The Cozy Side of a Multi-Day Iceland Elopement Adventure

Not every part of an adventure elopement has to involve standing on the edge of a cliff in formalwear. Some of Josh and Kim’s photos were taken back at their Airbnb about an hour outside of Reykjavík. And they have such a different feeling from everything we created along the coast. They changed into cozy clothes, grabbed drinks, played board games. And basically just got to hang out together while I documented it.

And then the Northern Lights showed up. We went from cozy photos inside to getting in the hot tub with the aurora glowing overhead, which still feels kind of unreal. Those photos are moodier and more intimate. And I love that they exist in the same gallery as the huge landscapes and colorful skies. Both sides tell you something about their trip, and neither feels like it was created just for the sake of taking photos.

Your Elopement Doesn’t Have to Fit Into One Day! Do An Epic 2-Day Adventure, Or Even 3!

This is probably my favorite thing about planning an elopement across multiple days or different parts of the day. You get to decide what actually deserves to be part of the story. Maybe you want one day for your vows and exploring somewhere incredible, then another evening hanging at your Airbnb. Maybe there’s a sunrise you really want to catch, a long drive to a location you’ve been dreaming about. Or you simply want enough breathing room that stopping at a random pullout because the sky looks amazing is totally doable.

Especially somewhere like Iceland, giving yourself that flexibility can make the whole experience feel so much more relaxed. Josh and Kim got dressed up and explored some pretty unreal places. But they also played games, sat in a hot tub, chased the Northern Lights, sang in the car, and experienced Iceland together. Your elopement doesn’t have to be one specific version of adventurous. It can be all of it.
