If you’re someone who loves being outdoors, a mountain engagement session might be exactly what you’re looking for! Nisha and Sunny’s engagement photos at Mount Rainier were filled with everything I love about adventurous sessions: beautiful mountain views, endless greenery, wildflower meadows, and plenty of moments that felt like them. Between exploring the trails, taking in the scenery, and capturing a mix of digital and film photos, their session was such a fun reminder that engagement photos can be so much more than just standing in front of a pretty backdrop.

One of my favorite things about mountain engagement sessions is how much variety you can get just by exploring one area. For Nisha and Sunny, we had everything from winding trails surrounded by greenery to a waterfall and open meadows with Mount Rainier in the background. I loved how they kept their outfits simple with neutral colors that complemented the scenery without taking away from it. And of course, we had to get some close-up photos of Nisha’s engagement ring! Their session was the perfect mix of those more intentional, romantic portraits and the fun, candid moments of them just enjoying their time together.
We also incorporated film photography into their session, which I absolutely loved! There’s something about the colors, grain, and overall feel of film that works so well with outdoor sessions, especially when you’re surrounded by so much natural beauty. Some of my favorite photos are the ones where Nisha and Sunny are simply walking together, laughing, or taking in the views. Nothing overly posed or complicated, just the two of them enjoying the experience. That’s what I want engagement sessions to feel like!

If you’re dreaming of engagement photos surrounded by mountains, forests, or beautiful green landscapes, there are a few things worth considering when planning your session. First is timing! I typically recommend starting about an hour to an hour and a half before sunset to get that softer, more flattering light. You’ll also want to think about the season, especially if you’re planning photos somewhere with higher elevations. For example, Mount Rainier can still have snow on many of its trails well into July, and snow can start returning as early as October. That leaves a pretty short window for those lush green meadows and wildflowers! Fall can also be beautiful for mountain sessions, with seasonal colors generally appearing around September through early November depending on the location and elevation. Every mountain location is a little different, so choosing the right time of year makes a big difference.
Another thing that’s really important to me when photographing in nature is following Leave No Trace principles. These places are beautiful, and I want to help keep them that way! That means staying on designated trails, respecting wildlife, packing out anything we bring, and avoiding stepping into fragile wildflower meadows just for a photo. The good news is you don’t have to go off-trail to get incredible photos. Whether we’re exploring a forest, stopping at a mountain overlook, or walking along a scenic trail, there’s so much we can do while respecting the environment. And honestly, I think the best engagement sessions happen when you treat them like a little adventure together rather than just another thing to check off your wedding planning list.
