There’s something so fun about taking a location that already has a ton of character and really leaning into it. These wedding photos at Chalet Theatre in Enumclaw, Washington were all about doing exactly that. Between the old theater seats, movie projections, dramatic lighting, and even the concession stand, there were so many ways to make the space feel completely different from one photo to the next. And honestly, this kind of location doesn’t have to be saved for wedding portraits either. I could see this being such a fun option for an engagement session, bridal portraits, or an elopement where you want your photos to feel a little unexpected.

Obviously, if you’re taking photos inside a theater, you have to have a little fun with the movie screen. Some of my favorite images from this session came from projecting old films and scenes behind them. It created this really cool layered effect where they almost looked like they had stepped right into the movie themselves.
Then we switched things up completely with dramatic spotlights, haze, and shadows on the screen. I love getting to play around with light like this because it gives you photos that feel more editorial without losing the two of you in the concept. You still get those close, quiet moments together, they just happen to have a really fun backdrop!

One of the best parts about a location like Chalet Theatre is that there’s so much more to work with than the actual theater. The rows of seats gave us those darker, moodier portraits, but then we could head to the concession stand for something that felt playful and completely different. Even stepping outside gave us the red tile, marquee, and classic theater entrance to bring another look into the gallery. That variety is a big reason I love choosing locations based on more than whether they’re simply “pretty.” Give me a place with interesting light, textures, little corners, and some personality, and there’s so much we can create without needing to go to five different locations.

Your wedding-related photos also don’t have to fit into one specific box. You can wear your actual wedding attire for a bridal session, plan an engagement session somewhere completely unexpected, or build a stop like this into your elopement day. If going to the movies is something you two genuinely love or you just want photos that feel a little more cinematic and creative, a theater gives us so much room to make the experience your own.
And you definitely don’t need to spend the entire session taking serious editorial portraits. Some of my favorite photos here are the ones where they’re laughing together in the seats. We can create the dramatic, artsy photos and leave room for the two of you to actually have fun together. Those two things don’t have to be separate.

If you’ve been looking at traditional photo locations and none of them really feel like you, we can absolutely think outside of that box. Whether you’re planning engagement photos, bridal portraits, an elopement, or want creative portraits on your wedding day, I’m always down to take an idea and see what we can do with it. And if wedding photos at Chalet Theatre are already on your mind, I’d love to help you turn the theater into something that feels completely your own.
