Peru holds a very special place in my heart. I first visited in 2017 with a humanitarian group to help build a school on the outskirts of Lima, which expanded access to education for local children. We were welcomed with a traditional Peruvian celebration, complete with colorful attire and lively dance performances. It was beautiful to see the joy, pride, and deep love for culture in every moment. Being half-Peruvian, I felt a unique connection to this experience—meeting incredible people, seeing the resilience and happiness in their lives, and connecting to my roots.

A Life-Changing First Visit to Peru

My first trip to Peru also opened my eyes to new perspectives on life, traveling out of North America for the first time. I went with a group of strangers who soon became some of my closest friends. Witnessing the beauty of Peru’s landscapes and the warmth of its people was unforgettable, and it really highlighted how rich life can be, with a deep focus on relationships, community, and tradition.

Second Journey: Returning to Peru with Family

Returning in December 2023, this time with my family, was equally meaningful. Acting as the “tour guide,” I led us from Lima to the breathtaking heights of Cusco and onward to the iconic Machu Picchu. While Cusco’s high elevation can be tough (coca tea and lots of water are lifesavers!), the city is filled with incredible food, vibrant streets, and welcoming locals.

Reaching Machu Picchu is an adventure in itself, and while it takes multiple steps, the journey is worth every moment. We started with a flight from Lima to Cusco, followed by a scenic bus ride to Ollantaytambo, and then a train through the Sacred Valley to the charming village of Aguas Calientes. Aguas Calientes has become one of my favorite spots, known for its cozy ambiance, incredible food, and kind-hearted people who are always happy to help.

Machu Picchu: The Ultimate Destination for Love and Adventure

As we made our way to Machu Picchu, I was struck again by its beauty and the serenity of the Andes. This breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site could not be more perfect for a wedding or elopement. Imagine exchanging vows surrounded by towering mountains and misty clouds, with a view like no other. You can either hike to the top or, for a more relaxed experience, take a timed bus that brings you right to the entrance. For couples looking to embrace both adventure and cultural richness, Machu Picchu is the ideal backdrop to begin a life together.
